My 1939 Model K is finally home. However it has been decided that #9642 needs a better home than I can give it so it is for sale. To maintain a harmonious home life I promised my wife that I will sell the car. However no time line was mentioned during the discussion so my plan is to repair the issues, get it running and hope she will change her mind after her first ride to town and I can keep it. We will see if the plan works.
Until then the car is for sale. The price is 30K firm to start and will increase as I repair each of the issues and like a 86 year old car it has some issues.
The Henry Ford people say the car/engine number is 9642. I haven't found the engine or frame number but the body tag matches. The production number is 9584, body number 10-62 with a Murray body. The type is 404B painted Royal Blue Dark. Interior trim is Laidlaw 323D with a 1644 substitution and the car was delivered to New York City.
The issues:
The engine doesn't run. One head is cracked, I have a set of used heads. The block is cracked and was repaired by what looks like braziing. The starter spins the engine easily with no grinding noises. The distributor and coil produce good spark at each spark plug. Condition of generator and water pump is unknown until the engine runs. The old finger in the hole compression test has compression in each cylinder, I'll know more about the piston/cylinder condition when I change the heads.
I think the paint is a repaint but it still shines and there is no checking or cracking but there are numerous scratches. The dash is in good condition with all the gauges. The brake vacuum adjustment lever and cigar lighter are missing.
The interior is missing the headliner and front right side door panel is in poor condition. The front seats are in good condition but the rear seats are stained and have minor moth damage. I will see if they are going to come clean. The floor carpets and footrest have major moth damage. I have all the wood window trim pieces but they need reconditioning, maybe soaking in Linseed oil?
The passenger running board rubber is cracked and dry rotted and missing the outer trim piece. I have a new replacement piece and the original piece. Some of the steel stripes are missing. The driver side running board has a 6 inch piece of strip missing but other wise is in good condition.
I have been a mechanic / fabricator for 50 years having repaired everything from lawnmowers to huge earth moving machines and I'm excited to put this knowledge to use fixing this piece of history.
As soon as I figure out how to get the pictures from my computer into this message I will have pictures.
I would like to Thank the club member that have already helped me with this project. THANK YOU !!!
