Thanks so much for the quick reply. I'm Craig's partner in this car. Your guess is right...Trouble climbing a 18% hill even in 1st gear. New plugs gaped to 020. Voltage with engine off and points closed is 5.

I am manually advancing timing by sound and feel because the Centrifugal advance is not working. That being said,

the car climbed the same hill last year ok.

Should I try to measure Amps?

If the engine is running well, you have no problem. How dose it run under a load, like climbing a hill in high gear. t engine pulls well, you don't have a problem To confirm, check point gaps - should .020"

Using an analog voltmeter to measure a high frequency chopped DC voltage will give a reading including the mass inertia of the meter hand and its actuating coil, it might read higher.

With the engine stopped, you get a higher oi==point-to point voltage at one coulld see a higher reading nearly 5V if that coil, points are closed. There are times when both sets can be closed..

Confusing?

We're measuring 1.2 V across the (+) and (-) terminals of the coils, while running. Using an analog meter.


Is this voltage high enough? We've heard it should be 4 or more V.
