Rear Axles: Vulnerable to Breaking?
Craig DeVine

Looking for advice from the group. Jim Miller and I bought a '30 Dual Cowl Sport Phaeton about a year ago. About 5 months ago, we broke the passenger side axle. After a search, Joe Rogers found a correct axle for us, and we just installed it, so we're back on the road.

Our search for a replacement axle revealed a couple things to us:

1) Axle length varies by year, model and which side you want, and maybe they're getting harder to find.

2) We heard that there seems to be a tendency for these axles to break. Several of the ones we looked at seemed to have been welded/repaired, and the one we broke looked to have been broken/repaired before too.

So here's the question: how careful do we need to be to prevent another axle fracture? One of our houses is on a steep grade (12% and then 19%) to get out on the road. Is this too steep for this car? Or is clutch technique equally (or more) important?

We'd love input in how best ot prevent another axle break. Thanks!
