1931 Solenoid Repair
Author Last Post
The Solenoid is a very basic unit as I discovered. I took it apart to find that the contacts were corroded. Cleaned it up, reassembled it, and its back to working order. It was a very easy fix.
My Solenoid has small bolts on the cover, and can be disassembled. It may have been rivets at one time. I will check to see if anything is loose.
Michael;
Not sure if the solenoid set-up of a 31 car is about the same of a 32 KB but from Page 86 of the Lincoln Service Manual they look similar. On my car, photo attached, I do not really see a way to open up the switch. The Lincoln Service manual also does not quote a repair option. The strange thing is that you report that the switch does click and the connection to the starter warms up but does not operate. Have you tried to measure the resistance over the switch when operating? Maybe the main internal connections have corroded which results in some current but not enough to supply the full load to operate the starter. I would first make sure all the connections are really tight, it is a lot of power going through, before trying to open the switch. To clean electrical contacts without opening a full switch I have used electrical contact cleaner spray in the past. It cleans but also dries quickly without leaving stuff in the switch. Good luck.

The Solenoid on my 31 decided to stop working. I couldn't turn the car over and thought it could be the starter or Solenoid. Checked the starter and it worked great. The Solenoid was making a clicking noise, and the pole that goes to the starter was getting warm, but the starter would not work. I was wondering if there is an article in the Fork and Blade on how to rebuild the solenoid. Please contact me with any help with this. Thanks, Michael Riley
